Used Gym Equipment – Is It Worth It?

Let’s face it, good fitness/strength machines don’t come cheap – so if you can save a few bucks by buying used gym equipment that is in good shape, why not? You can certainly make decent savings by buying secondhand, but there are a number of considerations to take into account before making what may, even at reduced prices, still be quite a major financial commitment. Some of the main points are covered briefly below and may serve as a useful heads-up or reminder when you are negotiating or searching for used gym equipment of all sorts:

Buying Used Gym Equipment from Individuals

This is probably going to be the cheapest option available to you and as most of the equipment available will have been bought for home use, they are more likely to be appropriate in terms of taking up space. You should be able to easily find foldable or stowable machines or ones that occupy only a small amount of floor space. If you are lucky, you might pick up equipment that was bought and never used – there’s a lot of it about!

The only drawback is you will not get any manufacturer’s guarantee and you may not be able to tell whether the equipment, if it has been used, has been maintained and checked properly. Anything with moving parts needs to be looked after to a certain extent and the best advice in this situation is to get it looked over by someone who maintains gym equipment for a living. If you know someone who will do it for free or for a nominal fee, that’s great. But if you have to pay someone to do it, you may find it costs more than you’ve saved.

Buying Secondhand From a Gym

Used gym equipment from a gym will at least have been properly maintained; however, it’s likely to have had relatively heavier use. On the other hand, if it’s being replaced purely because a newer version is available (most gyms like to keep up with the latest innovations), you could get a relatively new machine at a real bargain price. You still won’t have a warranty of course, but you might feel more confident about an ex-gym machine. Bear in mind also that public gyms usually have no lack of space and the equipment may be too big to fit comfortably in your home.

Refurbished With Warranty and Return To Base Delivery Costs

Some companies that sell new equipment also sell used gym equipment that has been refurbished (including ex-display or demonstration models). They sometimes offer a limited warranty as part of the purchase price or as an add-on extra. Either way, you have some comeback if something goes wrong. This would be my preferred option, from the points of view of both safety and commercial sense.

Delivery

Whichever way you decide to buy, always check delivery costs, including any costs that will be incurred under a warranty (a return-to-base warranty may entail you paying carriage charges in both directions, which can be quite serious for a large, heavy piece of machinery.

Keep the above in mind, and you should be able to buy your used gym equipment with confidence, and relatively cheaply.

Good luck!
